Having trouble with your heating and cooling system? Many homeowners’ first instinct is to call a professional to come and take care of the problem. However, there are a few steps you can take to determine whether you can save money by handling the problem yourself! We at Delaware Heating & Air want the best for our customers and we hope that you’ll be able to save money today by following these tips!

Check For Power Outage

Although simple sounding, power outages are a common occurrence. By checking your breaker, you can determine whether the power is out, or if a flip has been accidentally switched. Either of these examples could result in heating and cooling failure, so by checking your breaker you can easily eliminate the possibility, or eliminate the problem.

Check Air Filter

A lot of HVAC complications are a result of dirty air filters and it’s good for the overall condition of your HVAC system to replace your air filters about once a month. So check your furnace’s air filter and see whether it needs to be replaced.

Check Your Outdoor Unit

Outdoor units are often forgotten when it comes to heating and cooling maintenance, but they are one of the most important parts of your system. Make sure that there are no leaves, sticks, snow, or overgrown shrubs near your unit. Create a two foot radius around the unit to ensure nothing interferes with its productivity.

Check Your Air Ducts

If you notice that your HVAC system is not producing enough hot/cold air, then the problem may be with your air ducts. Check for kinks or tears on the outside of the ducts. Avoid actually working on the ducts as this should be handled by a professional. However you can save money on hourly maintenance by pinpointing the problems ahead of time.

Check the Thermostat

You can also check your thermostat to make sure it is on the correct setting. Make sure it is on and that no settings have been changed. If it isn’t on, try changing the batteries or checking your breaker.
