Pet Owners: How to Keep Pets and Keep Healthy Air Quality

Apr 9, 2021 | Blog, HVAC, Indoor Air Quality

It’s common knowledge that dogs hold the title of man’s best friend, and cats can be soft and playful companions for any family. However, as any parent has had to explain to their child, with owning pets comes responsibility. That being said, it can be easy to forget about your pet’s allergies. Especially with spring right around the corner, keeping your home allergen free for both your family and your pets can save everyone a lot of sneezes! That’s why we at Delaware Heating & Air would like to share our cleaning secrets with you!

How To Significantly Improve and Maintain Your Home’s Air Quality In Delaware, Ohio

Different cleaning techniques apply to different locations across the U.S. and the air quality is pretty bearable in the central Ohio area. However, if you own pets, the air in your home is guaranteed to be filled with additional allergens. Some common allergens can be saliva, fur, and the hardest to control: dander. It’s important as a pet owner to know how to clean your home so that both you and your pets are happy and healthy.

Keep Dust Out of the Picture!

By dusting frequently, you’ll keep dust mite levels down. It’s not uncommon for animals to be allergic to both dust and dust mites, and it’s very common for humans to experience allergic reactions from them. Additionally, because animal dander is more textured than human dandruff, dust mites can more easily attach themselves to it. This means that with every added pet you have in your home, the more dust mites. So try to make a habit of dusting all surfaces every 14-30 days.

Brush and Bathe Your Animals

It’s always important to keep your pets well groomed, and with spring coming it’s especially important to brush and bathe your animals. This is because your pets shed their winter coat and without brushing, will leave an excess of fur and dander in the air and on surfaces in your home. By brushing your pet once a day, you’ll ensure that the majority of the fur stays contained. Make sure to vacuum the area where you brushed your pet afterwards to pick up any missed fur.

Vacuum

Vacuuming is especially important in the spring. While many families tend to vacuum first in their list of cleaning chores, it’s better to vacuum last so that you pick up any fallen dust, dirt, hair, or fur that was stirred up during dusting.

Invest In Your Air Filtration System

There are many reasons why you should invest in your air filtration system, one of which is the well being of your pets. Because animals have heightened senses, they can detect changes in air quality much sooner than humans can. So it’s especially important to change your HVAC air filter at least once bi-monthly if you own pets.
