Winter is expected to stick around for a couple more months. Unfortunately, HVAC emergencies don’t care about what’s convenient for us and can happen anytime. But don’t let that catch you off guard; proactively preparing now for those worst-case scenarios is always a good idea. We strongly believe that every homeowner should have a backup plan in place in case they’re stuck at home due to a snowstorm, their furnace breaks down, or the power goes out. Don’t know where to start in terms of winter HVAC preparedness? No worries; Delaware Heating & Air has some tips and tricks to help you stay warm and safe no matter what winter throws your way.

HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR WINTER HVAC EMERGENCIES?

A great backup idea is to invest in a backup generator to provide power for your HVAC system and other essential appliances in the event of an outage. Portable heaters can also be a useful backup but just make sure never to leave them unattended for long periods. Furthermore, if you have a fireplace, consider stockpiling firewood and fire starters for emergency use. In the event of an HVAC winter emergency, you will be glad you kept an emergency supply on hand. Last of all, extra blankets can also come in handy, so keep some stored in an easily accessible location.

HOW DO YOU OPTIMIZE THE HEAT IN THE HOME DURING FRIGID WEATHER?

To optimize the existing heat in your home, make sure all your indoor vents are left open and unobstructed. Furniture or other objects blocking the airflow of the vents can confuse your HVAC system and cause it to start cycling. Closing blinds and window treatments on extra cold days can also provide an additional barrier to keep warmth from escaping. Bear in mind that your power does not have to be out to enforce these trips. Practicing them throughout the winter season, but especially during those extra cold days, will simply optimize the heat within your home.

HOW DO YOU MAXIMIZE YOUR HVAC SYSTEM’S EFFICIENCY DURING FRIGID WEATHER?

As part of your snow shoveling routine, don’t forget to check your outdoor heat pump (if you have one). You want to make sure no snow or ice buildup has accumulated on top of the heat pump. Additionally, outdoor vents need to be checked for snow or ice buildup as well; it’s just as essential to give the outdoor vents some TLC, just like your indoor ones. You may clean off snow or ice buildup on exterior vents by gently brushing them off with a broom or brush.

And last but not least, you should also clear any snow or ice from your gas meter. But be careful not to use heavy objects like shovels or snowblowers! Don’t kick the meter to knock off any snow and ice buildup, either. Instead, opt to use a broom or brush to clear away unnecessary buildup. As always, safety is important. So, if you notice any issues with your gas meter, shut off the gas supply and call a service professional if necessary.

By following these tips, you can stay warm and safe during winter HVAC emergencies as you wait for the power to come back on or for professional assistance to arrive.
