According to historical records, the village’s founder, Christian Gast, purchased 600 acres of land for only $4 an acre. Then in 1835, he started platting out a small village on the land he purchased. Gast originally named the village Middletown due to its location in the middle between Delaware and Marion, Ohio. However, later the village was renamed Prospect, which became the largest village within Marion County. Unfortunately, in March of 1913, the village and all of Marion County was hit by a flood. During this time, it steadily rained for five days straight. The flood killed 361 people, property damages over one hundred million, and evacuated over 65,000 residents. Despite this tragedy, as of the 2010 United States Census, the village was home to over 1,112 residents spanning less than one square mile of land.

Today, Prospect, Ohio, is operated by the Elgin Local School District and has one public library, which is a branch off of the Marion Public Library. In addition, there are various activities to participate in throughout the village, including visiting the Gallant Farm and Woods Preserve, the Delaware State Park, Shirk’s Homemade Candies, Veterans Memorial Park, the Granite Revolving Ball, as well as the Marion Cemetery and Monuments.
