The village of Sunbury was established in 1868. Still, it wasn’t recognized as a city until this year, 2021 after reaching a population of more than 5,000 total residents in 2020, which nearly doubled its total number of residents within the past 20 years. The city has about 4.8 square miles and is located east of Delaware County, Ohio, and north of Galena, Ohio.

Originally, in 1816, Sunbury was set up to be a stagecoach town because its founders were expecting to see many stagecoach travelers make their way through the village. Therefore, Lawrence Myers, the town’s founder, built an inn on the corner of the Old Walhinding Trail and the Delaware Newark Pike stagecoach routes. Then, in 1820 the first stagecoach passed through the town. Throughout the years of being a stagecoach town, many well-known stagecoach travelers stayed at the inn as they passed through the town, including Henry Clay, Henry Harrison, Rutherford B. Hayes, and Johnny Appleseed. Unfortunately, with the introduction of the railroad, the state no longer needed stagecoach drivers, and the final stagecoach passed through the village in 1873.

As of today, Sunbury is widely known as the home of the Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial, which honors every Ohio soldier who has died or gone M.I.A. since the U.S. tragedy of 9/11. Historians claim that Sunbury was chosen as the memorial’s location because it is near Centerburg, Ohio, which is the exact geographical center of Ohio.
