DISCOVERING OSTRANDER, OHIO

The village of Ostrander is located in Delaware County, Ohio. It was platted in 1852 and was officially recognized as an incorporated village on May 18, 1875. The village spans less than a mile, and as of the 2010 United States Census, it is home to 695 residents. The village is named after a civil engineer, Shelemiah Ostrander, the village’s railroad official. The development of the CCC & I Railroad that ran from Springfield to Delaware, and later Mansfield was one of the greatest accomplishments for the village at that time. However, in 1971 it stopped running after the railbeds rotted and could no longer safely be used. Since then, a lot of the rack has been removed, except for a small piece that resides at the old bridge over Blues Creek.

Today, Ostrander still remains a quiet and quaint village of about 700 residents. It has its own public library, built-in 1990, which is a branch of the Delaware County District Library. The village hosts some of the state’s best Fourth of July & Halloween celebrations, along with the village’s yearly car show.
