Imagine it’s a cold winter morning. The skies are gray. The air is crisp and sharp. You know it’s time to get out of bed, but instead, you wrap the covers tighter around you to act as a barricade against the chill air. And then it hits you. You realize the is house is freezing! What happened to the heat? Alas, your furnace has stopped working! So what should you do now? The following are some tips & tricks provided for you by the professionals at Delaware Heating & Air if your heat goes out this winter.
When your furnace goes out, you should always try these general troubleshooting steps first:
1. Did You Check the Furnace Switch?
Make sure the furnace is still turned on. There is usually a switch on the side of the furnace that can be flipped back and forth. Confirm this switch didn’t turn to the off position accidentally. If it did, simply fix this by flipping it back.
2. Did You Check the Thermostat?
Check the thermostat to see if it is still powered on. If the display is not working, try switching the thermostat’s batteries out for fresh ones and see if that solves the problem.
3. Did You Check the Heat Mode?
On the thermostat, check to see if it is on the proper setting, and nothing got changed by accident. Make sure the setting is still on “heat mode.” If it is not, try switching it back to the correct mode and give it some time to see if the heat kicks on and the furnace starts working again.
4. Did You Try Using Different Temperatures?
If, at this point, you are noticing the furnace is not blowing warm air at all or perhaps not blowing warm air very well, try using different temperature levels to see if it responds to each correctly. If the thermostat is not responding to any settings, then it may be time to call in a service professional.
5. Did You Check the Circuit Breaker?
Next, check out the circuit breaker. The furnace switch could have tripped. And the solution may be as simple as just flipping the switch back to its original position.
6. Did You Check the Pilot Light?
Don’t forget about the pilot light! The pilot light may have gone out in the middle of the night or at a time when you didn’t notice. Check to see if it needs to be relit. If you need to know how to do so, most furnaces have instructions on the side of the unit on how to relight your specific furnace.
While general troubleshooting (such as the steps mentioned above) is always recommended, we do not suggest performing your furnace repairs.
