DISCOVERING WESTERVILLE, OHIO
In what was once known as the “Dry Capital of the World,” the City of Westerville is a northeastern suburb of Columbus located in both Delaware and Franklin counties.
In 1859, the town passed an ordinance that prohibited the sale of alcohol. By the 1870s, however, an escalating conflict between pro- and anti-abstinence forces fermented into what was called the “Westerville Whiskey Wars”. Two times, in 1875 and 1879, local businessman Henry Corbin opened saloons in Westerville, and each time the people of the town used gunpowder to blow the places up.
In 1909, Westerville’s reputation for temperance was so prominent the Anti-Saloon League moved its national headquarters from Washington, D.C. to the city. The League was at the forefront of the Prohibition movement in the U.S., and had its greatest victory when Congress ratified the Eighteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. Even after Prohibition came to an end, Westerville stayed dry for most of the twentieth century.
Then, in 1995, Westerville annexed 941 acres of land to the north, which included several businesses that sold alcohol. Eventually, voters approved the sale of alcohol in “Old Westerville” at several establishments.
With a population of 41,103 as of last year, Westerville is home of Otterbein University.
