DISCOVERING WHITEHALL, OHIO
The city of Whitehall is an enclave of Columbus. Located on the east side, Whitehall is home to 18,926 residents.
Throughout the 1940s and 50s, Whitehall still had farms working in the area and was largely undeveloped. Back then, it was mostly small homes with people of mixed income. Although it was still technically a village in the 1940s, the local residents filed for incorporation in the year 1947.
However, Whitehall’s boundaries were expanded in 1953 eastward all the way to the Country Club and the edge of the Big Walnut Creek. Because of this sudden rapid growth in the area, later in the 1950s Whitehall officially became a city.
Prior to that, Whitehall became home to the first shopping center “strip mall” in the U.S., according to records. This shopping strip was named Casto’s Town and Country.
In August 1970, Whitehall made major headlines and was in the national news after 2 of their department stores were bombed in an elaborate robbery. The bombings were done to serve as a diversion during the armed robbery. The robber was a man named William Harris. Harris was quickly arrested by police after a witness to the crime and a civilian bravely chased him down to hold him and apprehend him for the police.
