DISCOVERING GALENA, OHIO
The small and quaint village of Galena is found in the heart of Delaware County between Big and Little Creek. The village spans less than 2 square miles and is home to only 653 residents, according to the 2010 United States Census. A man named William Carpenter founded the village in 1809 and called it Zoar. Then in 1834, residents petitioned for a post office, but “Zoar Post Office” already existed in Tuscarawas County. Thus, leading to the name change by Nathan Dustin. To this day, for unknown reasons, he suggested naming the village Galena, which was immediately approved.
Today, downtown Galena is filled with an extravagant town square and various local shops and restaurants. It sits a quarter-mile off Ohio to Erie Trail. In addition to the OTET, another popular paved trail in Galena was created and named Kane’s Crossing Trail. This trail is known by locals for its beautiful view from the bridge above Big Walnut Creek. New additions are currently being built in Galena to incorporate an easy walking path to the already established system of trails. On top of that, if you are an avid cyclist, Galena is a place to visit because it was placed on two major U.S. bike routes, 21 and 50A, so you’ll definitely get your workout in.
