DISCOVERING JOHNSTOWN, OHIO

The Village of Johnstown was founded in 1813 and is located in western Licking County, Ohio. This piece of land was initially chosen as the official United States Military Tract contributing to many soldiers to the Civil War; however, today, it is well known as a center of anti-slavery. It has a total population of 5,100 residents that stretches over almost 3 miles, according to the 2020 U.S. Census. That operates with one local school district encompassing one elementary, middle, and high school, a post office, and a public library. One of the most significant contributors to Johnstown’s success was the construction of the railroad in 1880, which led the town’s population to triple in just 40 years!

The Village of Johnstown is a part of a 4,000 acre piece of land deeded to John Brown by former President John Adams. However, Brown sold the property in 1810 to a doctor named Oliver Bigelow. Dr. Bigelow is responsible for laying out and incorporating the village of Johnstown. A fun fact about the Village of Johnstown is that in 1926, a farmer named James Bailey found a relatively complete skeleton of a mastodon, an ancestor of the American Elephant. After stumbling upon a rare piece of history, he sold it to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, where it still lives today.
