HVAC PRECAUTIONS FOR A COZY CHRISTMAS

Christmas in Ohio is such a magical time of the year! With snow, shopping, baking, and parties with friends and family, there are so many fun holiday activities to enjoy. And let’s not forget about the seasonal decorations that add to the festive atmosphere! But just make sure you don’t overlook your HVAC system in all the excitement. Sometimes, holiday decorations can interfere with your HVAC system or even pose a safety risk. So, remember to be mindful while you decorate for the month. Your friends at Delaware Heating & Air have got your back this Christmas!

1. Keep Flammable Objects Away from Your Heating Elements

When you’re decking the halls for Christmas, it’s easy not to think about all the safety aspects. We all get caught up in the festive vibe. But remember to be mindful of things like paper decorations, wrapped packages, blankets, and other objects that can easily catch fire. Be sure to keep them away from fireplaces and candles. And if you do use these elements, make sure to put them out properly before you leave your home or hit the hay for the night.

2. Keep Your Thermostat Unobstructed

It’s super easy to get carried away with placing garlands here and there. Maybe you’ve got an extra string of Christmas lights you want to hang somewhere? Whatever the case is, we want to remind you not to cover up the thermostat. When the thermostat is blocked, it can mess with its ability to accurately read the temperature in your home. And when that happens, it won’t properly communicate with your furnace, which means it won’t give out the right amount of heat your home needs. So, be sure to keep that thermostat clear!

3. Keep Your HVAC Vents Clear

Another thing you don’t want to forget about is your HVAC vents! With all the extra items and decorations around your home this season, make sure nothing is blocking those vents from doing their job properly. Although the Christmas tree and other items are only out temporarily, it’s still important to keep your vents unobstructed. The last thing you want is furnace issues during the holidays.

4. Keep an Eye on Your Condenser

Lastly, don’t forget to pay attention to your condenser (the outdoor unit). Even though it’s designed to withstand the elements and isn’t used in the winter season, it’s still a good idea to check for any loose debris like twigs, leaves, or random objects around it. Snow and ice, paired with loose debris or other loose items, can cause detrimental blockages and lead to your unit being damaged. So, it’s always a good idea to keep the area around the condenser clean and clear. And if you want some extra protection, you can use a condenser cover in the winter too!

Stay mindful and keep an eye out this season. Make sure your HVAC system is not limited to performing its job as intended.
